 40 Shoulder-to-overheads (Competition:155 /105, Rx: 135/95, L2:115/75, L3:95/65)

“Every day, we come in to work out and we lift. We run some, we sweat and then we go home.”

Is that an accurate description of what you do? Probably not. And it’s not because it’s factually incorrect, but because that statement lacks the details and nuance that makes it matter and applicable to you.

In the CrossFit Games, it’s the details that are going to matter. The difference between a good rep and a no-rep can be mere centimeters, forcing a a judge to make a judgment calls.

Because a failed pull up is easy to see when the athlete attempts to pull their chin over the bar and can’t get the strength to do anything but hang on. But a failed pull up is hard to see when the athlete is working their hardest but not getting their chin completely over the bar. Or even harder when the squat isn’t going to full depth but the athlete is so tired it feels like it is. These are the details that matter in competition.

In the Games, the judges are required to be a little more critical than what is usual. Therefore, if you’re going to be competing this year, be ready for our coaches to be a paying attention to the details of your technique. It’s for the integrity of the competition, the safety of everyone at the box and to make sure that during the competition, you are getting every single point out of your efforts that is possible.

It’s important that you do not get disappointed if your having trouble completing competition-grade lifts. This is a process for everyone involved, and for many of us, this is the hardest thing we do on a daily basis. And it’s because it’s hard and frustrating, that we feel so good when it’s done right. And when we feel a sense of accomplishment when it’s done right every time.

Definitely reach out to a coach if you’re just lifting, running, sweating and going home. The coaches are here to help you with the details.

If you haven’t already, register now for the 2014 CrossFit Games. The open workouts will be held at CrossFit Rosslyn on the Saturdays before the Sunday that the workout is due, and our coaches are certified judges for the everyone who chooses to do the workout RX / as prescribed. (You always have the option to come and do the workout scaled to your ability, but it won’t count in the official competition.)

Specific scheduling will be announced at a later date.
